Ideas For Your Baby's First Birthday Party

1.  Theme - If you choose to have a theme, think about what your baby likes.  Whether it is Elmo, horses, clowns, princesses or the beach, you can't go wrong.

2.  Guest List - Think about limiting your birthday party guest list to your family and close friends along with their immediate families.

3.  Time of Day - Consider when your baby is at his or her best, which is usually after a nap, and set the party time accordingly.  A first birthday party usually means that there will be lots of activity and focus on the baby, so timing can be critical to his or her mood.

4.  Menu - Make it easy on yourself.   Many families simply invite guests over for dessert.  However, it you would like to serve a meal, there are many easy options:

Hors D'oeuvres -  Warehouse clubs like Sam's Club, Costco, and Gordon Foods, sell very good finger food at a decent price.  Our family party favorites are mini pizzas, mini quiches, sweet and sour meat balls.
Barbecue - During the warm weather months, a barbecue can be fun and easy, especially if someone else is in charge of the grilling.   Beef, turkey, and even tofu hotdogs are a great choice because they are precooked.  You can also serve fresh fruit kabobs as a side dish along with some store-bought side salads.

Submarine Sandwiches - You can order these (one long one is a lot of fun!) or make them yourself.   If you decide to make them, start with fresh baked bread and add your favorite deli meats and cheeses.

Side Dishes - If there are toddlers and young school aged kids, be sure to have some chicken nuggets as well as Mac and Cheese around.  This is something that you may wish to ask someone to bring.

5.  Party Supplies - These can be costly, and most of the time they are tossed away, so you may consider purchasing a few festive colorful plastic table cloths.   Use solid color standard paper plates, plastic silverware a cups.

6.  Activities - Consider your guests when planning activities.  Some parents like to hire a babysitter to watch the little ones or toddlers.  Be sure to have toys and games based on the ages of the guests.  You can even ask a parent or two to be in charge of this.
